Tyres

Most consumers think tyres are only round and black? That couldn’t be further from the truth. Tyres are a vehicle’s most important safety feature, and have been for more than 100 years. A vehicle’s tyres are its sole contact with the road. The engine and brakes work directly through the tyres. Even the most advanced traction and stability control systems are limited by the tyre’s ability to hold the road. So, if a consumer has tyres that are worn, under inflated  or not suited to the environment, they put themselves, their vehicle, and others at risk. But before consumers can select the right tyre, they have to understand a little tyre technology first.

Regardless of a tyre’s speed rating, load-carrying ability, size, and construction, traction is the key to safety. A common mistake by consumers is to select a tyre without considering its ability to hold the road. Savvy consumers will balance a tyre’s traction in the dry, in the wet, and in the snow. If you desire a high-performance tyre but live in northern climates, consider a “winter” tyre for driving in the snowy season. If you live where the weather is warm year ’round, then perhaps a touring tyre instead of an all-season tyre would suit your needs just fine.

Most consumers will make the mistake of waiting until spring to get new tyres. As a tyre wears out, dry traction generally increases and wet and snow traction decrease. So the best time to buy new tyres is not in the spring, but in the fall.
